In addition to knowing the education requirements for becoming a laboratory technician, it’s important to understand how to succeed in the career. What’s involved? Here are five tips for success.

1.     Be Knowledgeable

Your work as a lab technician requires you to be knowledgeable. In your daily routine, you will receive, process, and analyze samples. Samples can include human tissue or fluid, air, water, soil, or chemical products. You’ll need to be a continuous learner and knowledgeable in several areas, including:

  • Chemistry;

  • Biology;

  • Biochemistry;

  • Microbiology;

  • Physics; and

  • Health and Safety Protocol.

Without continuous education, it will be difficult to produce reliable, high-quality test results and keep up with the demands of your job.

2.     Acquire Technological Skills

Performing tests as a laboratory technician requires proficiency in the use of technology. Without technology, you won’t be able to perform tests, obtain data, and document and report results. You’ll use a variety of technology throughout your workday, including:

  • Computers;

  • Electronics;

  • computer hardware and software;

  • electronic medical record software; and

  • laboratory information systems software.

3.     Practice Good Organization

Laboratory tests are performed at a workstation. The organization is required to ensure the paperwork, specimens, and documentation are correctly prioritized, processed, and completed. Scattered items around your workspace will create confusion and can result in serious mistakes and erroneous test results.

4.     Learn to Communicate Well

Laboratory technicians usually work with other technicians or medical staff. Effective speaking, listening, and writing skills are essential for several tasks, including:

  • Explaining and understanding procedures

  • Conveying test results and other findings

  • Communicating with medical personnel and patients

  • Accurately documenting and recording test data

5.     Be Flexible

Flexibility is required to work in different facilities and departments, and with different people. You might be asked to vary your workdays or shifts or to work extended shifts to meet deadlines. Or the lab you work in can receive emergency requests that require you to alter your priorities for the day. If you’re willing to be flexible and view the fluctuations as learning opportunities, even the most stressful situations can be managed well.
