Your resume made it through the algorithm and has captured a recruiter's attention. That is excellent news! They want to schedule an in-person call, Zoom meeting, or another type of initial interaction. It would help if you impressed them, no question about it. They are the go-between for you and the hiring organization. Just because it is a request that seems informal, do not overlook this significant step. Take it seriously to proceed to the next series of interviews. Here are some ways to ace the interview with a recruiter:
· First impressions on video. Like how you would present yourself in person, keep in mind a few things when you interview over video. Personal appearance is vital with well-groomed hair and wearing professional-looking attire. Make sure you have a reliable internet connection. Sitting down and staying in one place during the interview is preferred. Finally, a background that does not distract can go a long way.
· Avoid regurgitating your resume. They can read it. They are highly likely to find it online and have it in front of them. You have an opportunity to sell yourself in a conversation. Be available to touch on your strengths in the job description and the company. They may ask some questions, but they want to vet you before submitting you to the hiring manager. Connect the dots for them to be confident when sending you through to the next round.
· Be Assertive. You will be on the phone with the recruiter. Be enthusiastic and let that shine through. Walk around before the call, make sure you're not sleepy, have some water nearby if your throat gets dry. Think about how your voice sounds when you pick up the phone and receive good news; the recruiter needs to respond to that same level of excitement and overall excitement. They make a ton of calls daily, so be the one they remember, the one they smiled about, and the one they want to get selected.
· Act confidently. Your skillset is why they contacted you, but now they want to know if you fit the organization. Will you be an excellent team member to those around you? Will you be someone who stays at the job for a while? Will you be someone the organization remembers as a great hire from that recruiter? The recruiter should know by the end of the call if you're a good cultural fit.
· Accept good advice. If the recruiter does put you through to the next round, they will hopefully give you some advice on the interview process for that company. Follow up if they try to ghost you. Part of succeeding in an interview is listening to what is said, and you will bond with the recruiter when you follow their advice. Having a reliable, professional relationship with a recruiter is never the wrong idea for creating an exciting career.
